Distance Learning Correspondence Courses Versus Online Courses

13

For over two hundred years, distance learning has been a means of gaining education for those who, for whatever reason, elect to study from their home. Beginning with the first correspondence courses that were offered through advertisements in newspapers and magazines, and later also marketed on the backs of matchbook covers, through to the vast amount of distance learning opportunities currently offered by both universities and by independent schools, the chance to broaden ones knowledge without having to attend a physical school has offered academic independence to millions of students of all ages, across all areas of study.

Regardless of what the program is, and what sort of education it provides, whether it is a home school for children in middle school, a specialized upgrade class for someone in a trade or a masters program, distance learning can be broken into two mostly separate, but sometimes overlapping categories: online courses and correspondence classes.

Correspondence courses, which are the traditional method of providing distance education, make use of the postal system to distribute learning materials to the student. While there is usually a firm final date by which all activities and assignments must be completed and handed in, the actual course scheduling is left open, for the student to design according tot their needs. Correspondence courses may make use of materials that use technology, such as learning videos, and students nowadays typically use a computer for word processing and more often than not, for submitting their work via email as well, traditional correspondence courses do not rely upon technology for distribution or actual work completion or submission. Student study and work independently, even though there are likely to be many other students studying the same program. Group assignments and classes are not part of this type of distance learning, as a rule.

Conversely, online courses have a tendency to be presented to a group of students at one time, in a virtual classroom model. Through the use of computer technology, online live real-time virtual classrooms present the material and lessons to students in a group, and forums and programs are in place to all discourse and discussion between students, who can and are encouraged to work together. As classes are not independent, the schedule is far tighter than that found in correspondence classes, which keeps the group learning and advancing together.

The 20 Fattest and Fittest Universities

8

Is your university populace fit as a fiddle, sprinting between classes and the gym with the greatest of ease, or is it, as a whole, huffing and puffing its way back and forth from the computer lab to the local late-night hot dog joint? This is, of course, an exaggeration, but Mens Fitness magazine did partner with research organization the Princeton Review to come up with this much-needed, and never-before-produced, list.

Using surveys of nearly 10,000 students from more than 660 of top colleges and universities in the United States, the researchers graded each school on the following criteria:

Student Bodies: Students gender, height, weight and weight gained or lost since beginning college. Exercise: A measure of students participation in weekly vigorous and leisurely physical activity. Bad Habits: A summary of how much fast food, alcohol and cigarettes students consumed on a weekly basis, along with how much time was spent participating in sedentary activities (other than studying), like watching TV or playing video games. Other Lifestyle Choices: Supplement use, amount of sleep per night, and significant others influence on fitness goals. Campus Culture of Fitness: Physical fitness requirements (or recommendations) and student opinions on the overall fitness of their school and whether the campus promotes physical activity.

The grades from each category were averaged to form the final grade. And the survey says:

Why You Should Consider Photography Courses

21

There are many options available for those looking to buy a new camera. Some cameras are better suited to professional use, while others are perfect for capturing pictures from your weekend getaway. When you make the purchase, though, you are purchasing a tool that will allow you to capture incredible images. If you want to learn how to use the camera to its full potential or learn how to use it to create art, you should consider the benefits of photography courses. These courses have something to offer photographers at all skill levels, and picking the right course can change the way that you use your camera.

Learning to Use Your Camera

Cameras are expensive devices. Unfortunately, some buyers buy an expensive camera only to find that they have no idea how to use the product. While this might leave you with a quality device, it also leaves you with little more than an attractive paperweight. If you do decide to buy a camera, you should always make sure that you purchase a device that is at your skill level. If you really want to get the most out of one of those new Nikon cameras, you are best served by taking a photography course that can teach you how to use them correctly. You might not learn how to create art, but you will learn how to justify your purchase.

Creating Art

Of course, some truly do want to use those new Nikon cameras to create art, and photography courses can help to teach you quite a bit about the process. Photography courses can offer students many advantages that a textbook cannot, especially when it comes to the actual art of photocomposition. Working with an experienced teacher can help you learn the various techniques used to get the most out of a single picture, and it can help you to learn how to make the most out of your camera purchase.

Honing Your Skills

Even if you already know quite a bit about using a camera, it is likely that your skills can still use a little work. You might be a professional photographer or an individual who participates in amateur competitions, but good photography courses can help you to hone your current abilities. You might learn about new apertures or lenses that can make a huge difference in your picture quality, or you might just be able to brush up on those basic techniques that you have left far in the past. No matter what, though, there is a better chance of becoming a photographer if you spend time working with a professional.

No matter what your intentions, though, these courses will give you the knowledge necessary to take better pictures. If you are willing to invest in a camera that is more than just a disposable toy, it is always worth your time and your money to make sure that you know how to use it to its fullest potential.

How To Become A University Lecturer

10

The most important thing in becoming a university lecturer is to get the qualifications needed. If you decided to pursue this career a while ago (around 50 years before the career became professionalised) a post graduate qualification was not really necessary. However nowadays things are very different in the education world. It is now near impossible to achieve a permanent lectureship without completing a PHD and that is combined with a good bachelors degree of 2.1 or above and possibly masters too.

Although if you think you can do it, then go grab that educational career. However before you rush into it think about what can make you stand out and how to sponge all that experience prior to your permanent lectureship. Whilst you are doing your PhD you may be offered the chance, although many universities discourage the idea, to do on an hourly rate, a little teaching in your department. This could be anything from marking essays and teaching seminars, to contributing towards labs and possibly lectures too. This is a great step forward in expanding your experience and skills for the position.

Following all the hard work of your PHD and experience building, many scholars still find it particularly difficult to find their perfect job immediately. But dont let this put you off, as everybody needs to start somewhere. Hourly paid or temporary and part time jobs are always available and will assist in you gaining even more experience for when a well paid, suitable job comes up. Reviewing this time as something to help further develop your skills and CV content is great for helping you through this possibly stressful time.

So where can you find the jobs that will provide you with the salary, professionalism and general long lived happy success driven career that you have always dreamed of? The first place to start is with your colleagues, supervisors, friends, friends of friends and many others in the academia field. Make sure you always ask plenty of questions and for lots of advice as their answers will be invaluable. The search for you as the perfect candidate will be processed through members of the department, and only later will these positions be advertised publicly.
The internet and recruitment agencies are also a great place to look for the perfect job role. This way you can actually read their requirements and details of the job role to make sure you are their perfect candidate prior to your application.
