Showing Interest – Subsidized Vs. Unsubsidized Student Loans

5

Getting a federal loan is a very good thing; anyone would agree with that. However, the most common misconception is that “the loan is given by the government directly to the students, and after they have graduated, they do not need to pay” This may sound misleading, but in fact it is what many people believe is the way it works.

A federal loan is usually given through an institution, usually a common financial institution that the students know of. This loan can be divided into two different forms; the subsidized and unsubsidized student loan. So how does an unsubsidized loan differ from a subsidized one? Technically, the subsidized student loan and unsubsidized student loan do not differ much in nature.

Similarities

Firstly, both the subsidized and unsubsidized student loan is equally guaranteed by the US Department of Education. This can be either directly or through certain guarantee agencies. All students are equally eligible to receive both the loan types, although certain distinction may apply to determine the subsidization. But there is no distinction of credit scores or other financial issues, except for the factor of family income.

Secondly, both the subsidized and unsubsidized student loan offers a grace period of six months. This is a common grace period given by almost all kinds of student loans. This would mean that the student does not need to pay until six months after his graduation. Another alternative would be three months after the student becomes a less-than-full-time student without graduating, meaning that even before one complete his studies, he starts working part-time. Both the loan types offer the same amount of loan limit.

Differences

The difference lies in the interest. For the subsidized student loan, the government pledges to pay the interest to the moneylender while the student is studying. For the unsubsidized student loan, the student pays his own, although it varies according to his financial capacity almost every year. For example, if the student borrows $2600 a year, for unsubsidized student loan repayment, he has to pay back $2600 plus interest. For a subsidized one, he only pays the $2600.

Although the difference is only in the interest, it is a significant difference as it can make or break your monthly budget especially if you are just out of college and looking for a decent job. Therefore, wherever and whenever possible, try to secure a subsidized loan; it will make a huge difference when repayment time arrives.

Finding The Right Music Teacher

2

If you have done the prerequisite research I mentioned then this should not be an issue. However, guitar playing is such a personal undertaking that finding the right teacher is relative to each student. What works for one, clearly does not always work for another.

Your teacher should care about you and take an interest in seeing you advance as a player. If this were not the case, I think this would be the biggest red flag to me if I was taking lessons all over again. I would want to know that there was some nurturing involved. If you feel that there really is no connection between the two of you then I think this might be a factor you can use to determine whether you move on or not.

It’s tricky. As a student you want the best teacher for you, but you may not know, if there is no barometer to show you.

I also think that many times the student is to blame for being a lousy student. I remember when I used to give private lessons. A few students would come back week after week and had done no practice at all. I found myself explaining the same things over and over and of course we couldn’t move on until the essential groundwork was covered. These students eventually gave up because they had no drive or ambition to improve. This can be very frustrating to the teacher. Other times extremely talented players would come for just a few lessons because all they needed was a little fuel to go off on their own and practice. They were literally sponges. These students are heaven for teachers!

So do the research, then take a lesson or two and see if that teacher is right for you. If you are serious about working at your instrument then you shouldn’t be to blame for being a bad student. At that time it’s simply a matter of finding the right person. Don’t short change yourself.

How To Fast Track Your Way To Becoming A Teacher In The State Of Texas

6

In the state of Texas, there are many things that you have to do in order to become fully qualified as a teacher. The first thing you need to do is go to university and pick up your bachelor’s degree. This degree doesn’t need to be in any particular subject, it doesn’t need to be related to the subject that you want to teach, and it doesn’t need to be related to education either – you just need to have a bachelor’s degree.

Now this isn’t always true, because there are certain subjects that you can teach without actually having a degree at all however these subjects are very few and far between and the most notable of subjects are careers and technology.

The next part of your qualification process is to go through an approved teachers education program that would teach you the science of pedagogy. Pedagogy is simply the Art of teaching — it’s the kind of course that shows you exactly what you need to do to make sure that the lessons that you’re giving are effective. This course doesn’t teacher in the subject specific knowledge rather give you the skills that you need to get your knowledge across to your students.

So here is what most people don’t know about this approved teacher education program. If you are a student then the chances are that you would agree program has an optional module that you can take that is equivalent to an approved teacher education program — this means that if you want to become a teacher you can take this module and when you graduate you don’t need to do any more training you can just jump in and take the final examinations.

Obviously, this is going to save you lots of money and time and is the fastest way that you can become a teacher if you are a college student. So just to clarify, if you take this path, once you leave college you will then have to pass two examinations. The first examination is all about your skills as a teacher and basic literacy and numeracy that isn’t subject specific. The second, and arguably more difficult of the two, is all about your subject specific expertise — so if you’re going to teach maths, then you’ll take a maths teaching exam and you will be tested on your depth of knowledge of the subject in hand.

One of the best things about this fast track program is that schools and colleges actually really like the fact that you have come straight out of university and college and can go straight into a teaching position with the especially in states like Texas where there is a massive shortage of teachers currently and schools are crying out for talented young individuals.

The Teacher becomes the student

8

A relationship expert once said that during an argument, there’s usually three sides to every story: his side, her side, and of course, the truth. This is something we must definitely keep in mind as teachers. Many educators (especially professors), have been accused of having the biggest egos this side of Mount Rushmore. One of the quickest ways to burn out in education is to refuse to embrace change. Keep in mind whether we want to admit it or not, life moves and changes constantly.

Students are constantly exposed to material we once never dreamed existed. Ironically, although students are exposed to more, they typically know less and are less mature than the generations before. However, that does not discredit the fact that students still bring a unique perspective to our classroom; it’s through their eyes that we can become better teachers.

One useful strategies for maintaining a high level of motivation in the classroom, can come from the Sales industry. Rule #1 in Sales is that in order to bring the customer to where you are (your level of understanding), you must first go to where they are (they’re current level of understanding). In simple terms, you must know your customer (in this case, your student).

Relating this concept to the education arena, you must simply and clearly define your objectives and what you would like to see happen over the course of a semester (or even a brief interaction) with a student, and then you help your students to do the same. In other words, know where YOU want to go, help them find out where THEY want to go, and then come up with a strategy for both of you to get there. In negotiating terms, they call this a win-win solution. Obviously, this strategy can only work if you value the student, and you believe he or she can make you a better teacher.

Students aren’t as concerned with the subject matter itself as they were with how the subject matter is being taught. They are more concerned with the Teachers attitude than the answers they are given. This might be a revelation to many eductators

If you want to become a more productive educator in or outside of the classroom, the key is student input – you must seek it. They say that the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again, but expecting different results. If you listen to and solicit feedback from your students, you won’t have to repeat the mistakes of the past. So value your students and their input; trust me, they hold the keys to your success.

Student Pilot’s Guide To Aviation Headsets

2

My brother recently decided to become a pilot. Becoming a pilot is a costly venture and since I work in the industry as a buyer, he contacted me for some advice on student pilot materials and headsets. The supplies were easily referred as there are four main publishers of student pilot material and Jeppesen seems to be the most popular. However, it was difficult to direct him to the best aviation headset to purchase.

In order to direct him to the most cost effective headset I needed to determine a couple of factors. The first is price. The most popular student headsets are made by David Clark, and the most popular headset for students is the H10-13.4, the cheapest price I found was about $299.95. Another popular brand would have to be AvComm. AvComm offers a PNR Headset AC-200PNR that is in the $100.00 price range. Finally, Aviation Supplies and Academics offers a headset called the Airclassic HS-1 that is in the same price range the AvComm PNR. Therefore, the cheaper headsets are made by AvComm and ASA.

However, cost is not the only aspect to look at when purchasing an aviation headset. What about reliability? David Clark and AvComm both offer 5 year manufacturer warranties, while the ASA HS-1 has a lifetime guarantee. Headsets often go defective as cords can acquire shorts, they can be sat on, or even crushed in a flight bag. Therefore, a lifetime warranty is definitely tempting. This aspect goes hand and hand with cost as I am sure that you will feel better replacing a $100.00 headset rather than a more expensive model. My flight department use to operate with 12 Bose Aviation X headsets, although the headsets worked great and were comfortable, they were always being broken by the replacement of a 9 volt battery that controls the electronic noise reduction. After paying for 10 or more $500.00 repairs to these headsets, our flight department decided to downgrade to a Telex commercial headset. The same thought that goes into purchasing headsets for commercial or corporate use will benefit student pilots as well. Less investment = less lost.

Finally, the last topic would be in regards to comfort. According to reviews all the people that purchase David Clark headsets are satisfied with the comfort while ASA and AvComm have mixed reviews. A chief pilot at my organization talked to me about the HS-1 Headset. He states, the headset works great and still works to this day, but the headband was quite uncomfortable for long trips. However, there is a solution to comfort issue on either the ASA or the Avcomm Headsets. Gel and foam ear seals along with replacement headbands can offer additional comfort to these units ultimately making them comparable to the David Clark Model. Total investment in upgrades would be in the 150-175 range.

Given this information, what headset are you going to buy?

Conference Brings Educators, Students and Businesses and Organizations Together for Career Minded Hispanic and Latino Students

20

This years annual conference sponsored by Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology, Engineering, Math and Science (AHETEMS) will bring together educators, students, and leaders in government and industry. The purpose of this summit is to advance scientific and technical education, career paths, and life goals for a variety of Hispanic and Latino students across the United States.

The annual conference held by SHPE and AHETEMS will be in Cincinnati, Ohio, October 27-31, 2010, at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza and the Duke Energy Convention Center. The conference will include a Deans Summit, an Educators Forum and ample opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and high school students to learn about scholarships and internships to advance their learning opportunities and professional growth in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

In the “Rising Above the Gathering Storm” report, the National Science Board (NSB) raised concerns about statistical data that indicates a “troubling decline” in the number of U.S. citizens who are studying and training to become scientists and engineers. The NSB projections show that the number of jobs requiring STEM skills is growing at more than four times the rate of the U.S. labor force as a whole. To complicate matters, the present workforce employed with federal agencies that focus on scientific professions is readying for retirement. In 2010 alone, 71% of the U.S. governments permanent employees in STEM fields will be eligible for retirement and 40% are expected to exercise this option.

Since a huge number of professionals in the STEM fields are due to retire, high profile government agencies are interested in properly preparing bright and motivated students for successful STEM careers. The foundation for a successful career begins in high school, college, and graduate school. At this time especially, the opportunity is ripe for organizations such as SHPE and AHETEMS to provide the necessary funding and mentoring to improve career opportunities in high paying fields for Hispanic and Latino students. Over thirty years of working to advance Hispanic and Latino students opportunities has shown those who are traditionally underrepresented in these lucrative and well-respected professions flourish when financial, study, and career opportunities are introduced.

This annual conference is a unique opportunity for Hispanic and Latino high school students who are focused on careers in technological fields to see what college is all about, prepare for SATs, learn how to write effective essays, and obtain a wider view of the jobs available in the technical fields. High profile government agencies, such as NASA and the Department of Energy, participate in this conference. Representatives from these and other agencies and companies attend this conference to speak directly to students aspiring to work in scientific and technical fields and study at colleges and universities across the United States.

What’s Really Happening With CFS Student Loans

15

While students figure out the simplest way to fund their studies, they ought to look at a variety of financing solutions. Private loans are used whenever federal loans, grants as well as other types of funding aren’t adequate to pay for the entire expenses associated with education.

Being a market leader within the student loans and consolidation industry, Collegiate Funding has joined up with Chase. This new alliance between Collegiate Funding Services (CSL) along with Chase is certainly turning into a huge success and is today referred to as the Chase Student Loan (CSL).

A CSL is a credit-based private student loan that is accredited through your school’s educational funding office. Your current school definitely will ask you to fill out a Free Federal Student Aid application to evaluate your loan qualifications.

Even though a cosigner is not required to make an application for a private student loan, they will assist you with your approval as well as enabling you to be eligible for a reduced rate of interest. Approximately 30 % of parents have invested in the 529-college-savings program.

The CSL is also used as a private loan, ideal for undergrad and graduate students who want to carry on with their studies. Students ought to initially select federal loans as a result of reduced interests. Having said that, more often than not federal loans aren’t sufficient to pay for food, accommodation costs, textbooks etc.

Chase student loans (CSL) are usually targeted at individuals to lower their repayments. Acquiring a consolidation loan provides you with a single payment amount along with a static interest rate. You’ll also be in a position to obtain this form of assistance using the CSL.

Advantages of the Chase Select Private Student Loan:
oIn-school deferment settlement is available, meaning that no repayments expected whilst you are still in school.
oZero application or settlement costs
oFinancial loans from $500 up to the fee associated with attendance (less some other aid), though not exceeding the amount certified through your own school
oMonies will be paid directly to your school
